What Is Paint Protection?

Who wouldn’t like their car to remain shiny and new forever? But with the dirt and grit from the daily use and those scratches from the wear and tear, this dream becomes short-lived. But now this dream can be made possible with the help of paint protection.

Paint protection is a transparent or clear coating of urethane material, which is installed to cover the original painted surface of a car to protect it from the habitual damage that can be inflicted during day-to-day use. It shields the paint on the body of a car from scratches from rock chips, bug splatter, discoloration from the acidic nature of bird droppings, fading, etc. Even though it acts as a protective layer, it does not completely protect the car against heavier damage from parking scuffs or major dents due to accidents.

How Is Paint Protection Made?

Paint Protection Film uses the urethane technology which involves creating a transparent layer which is applied over the body of the vehicle. This technology was originally developed by the military to protect their choppers from damage. During the Vietnam War, the helicopters of the US Army were plummeting because of damage on the leading edge of their rotor blades. So the military researched to develop a technology that would help avoid this.

It was light-weight, resilient and could be easily replaced just at a fraction of the cost of replacing the whole rotor blade. The military also extended the use of urethane films by using it on the noses of fighter jets as this technology turned out to be very successful and efficient in protecting them from damage. Soon the NASCAR found the benefits of urethane technology in protecting the frontal half of race cars which used to display the decals of the advertisers who paid a lot of money and were getting damaged due to on-track scuffs at high speed. It was during the nineties that urethane films finally became available to the general public in the form of paint protection for automobiles. This technology has evolved and grown a lot since then and gained a lot of popularity in the automobile industry.

Only the Best for Your Vehicle

Reasons to Get A Paint Protection

Protection From Rock Chips, Scratches And Other Debris

Urethane protection film has been used to protect vehicles from scratches by gravel and rock chips. Originally developed by the military for their helicopters, they are still being used as protective films on military vehicles because of their efficacy. The benefits of protective films have been put to use even by the speed-race car drivers, who installed paint protection films on their race cars very extensively to shield them from all the dust and gravel from tracks and off-road races.

The best thing about these protective films is that they are transparent, letting your car’s finish shine through while protecting it from damage. You have numerous brands of paint protection to choose from, so make sure you always choose a trusted brand that is not only clear but also gives an ultra-smooth finish. When a top-quality material is installed by expert and skilled professionals you sure won’t be able to make out that it’s there.

Custom Installation Offers Better Protection

Paint protection film installation can be availed in a pre-cut computer designed kit or you can choose to get it custom cut by professionals and installed on your vehicle. As professionals perform the customization specifically for your car, custom kits are more expensive. But, obviously a custom cut kit would provide a much better fit as the film would be precisely cut and designed specifically for a particular make and model of a vehicle by a highly skilled professional. This provides complete coverage over all the vehicle surfaces perfectly fitting especially, along the edges. We always recommend custom installation over pre-cut kits for a smoother, seamless look and more thorough coverage.

How to Install Paint Protection Film

Clean and Prep the Surface

A good degreasing agent should be used to remove debris. The surface must then be compounded and polished to eliminate any imperfections before installing the PPF.

Cut the PPF Material into Sections

Once the vehicle is prepped thoroughly, the installer cuts the film material according to the required size for installation. It is similar to a window tint film. We prefer installing the paint protection films in sections, such as on the hood, then side mirrors, door, the panels, quarter panel, or other sections less than 5 square feet. After the film is cut, they will line it up to prepare for installation.

Use An Activator Solution

To Install a paint protection film an activator is required – called a fitting solution. This allows the film to activate a ‘glue-like’ material, which causes it to adhere to the surface of the paintwork. Depending on the brand of the protective film, the fitting solution can be anything ranging from plain water to a soap-like substance.

Fitting the PP Film

This is the most technique-sensitive part that is why we need trained professionals to install it perfectly. The film does not just fit correctly when applied directly. The process of installation of a PPF comprises a series of spraying, squeegee and moving the film. When it is in the precise position, the installer uses a squeegee to expel any bubbles or remove creases in the film.

Drying Stage

Once the Paint Protection Film has been installed without any bubbles or creases, the film requires drying or heat-activating. An industrial heat gun that helps to activate the adhesive and enable the PPF to adhere to the body is used. It also shrinks the film creating a tight fit to the surface.

After Care

You must know how to maintain the film and what not to do in the first 7 days of installing the PPF on the car.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is It Important To Use A Paint Protection Film On My Car?

Paint Protection Film(PPF) shields your vehicle by creating a barrier from any scratches or damage and protecting the front-facing surfaces. This increases the future resale value of the vehicle too and keeps it looking newer for a longer time.

Can The Paint Protection Film On My Vehicle Be Removed Later?

Yes. Even though Paint Protection Film is meant to be permanent, it can be removed without causing any damage to the vehicle.

How Do You Install The Paint Protection Film On The Vehicle?

Before the application of the paint protection film we design and pre-cut specific panel shapes. This guarantees that there is no need for scoring on the vehicle whatsoever and gives a completely flawless and virtually invisible finish to the car. Our pre-cut film designs are applied to the car using a specially formulated gel solution and with the help of a squeegee. We do not use heat in order to stretch or mount the PP film, unlike in vinyl or other paint protection films.

Are There Any Special Precautions To Be Taken By Me While Washing The Film?

You can wash and wax the vehicle normally after the curing process. In-fact it is recommended to wax the PPF to help bring out the gloss.

If By Chance The Paint Protection Film On My Car Gets Scratched, What Happens?

The special feature of self-healing in our paint protection films uses a special polymer in its transparent coat that flows even after it is cured. This allows the clear coat to obtain its original level again after being disrupted on the surface.

How Long Does It Take For A Scratch, If Any, To Heal By Itself?

The time taken for a scratch to heal depends on the severity of the scratch and the ambient temperature. Minor scratches ordinarily heal in one hour at minimum room temperature (72°F). But in warmer climates, healing time will be shorter. The healing process can be accelerated by just pouring hot water over the scratched area.

The good news is with the self-healing layer, there are no limitations to the number of times the self-healing coat can heal itself. As long as the clear coat is not penetrated it can heal itself over and over again.

How Should My Car Surfaces Be Prepared Before The Application Of Paint Protection Film?

All surfaces must be cleaned before applying the film. However, make sure to utilize a cleaner that will not leave a residue. On repainted vehicles, paint must be thoroughly dry and completely cured before applying any film onto the vehicle to avoid film bubbling due to paint outgassing.

Can Paint Protection Film Be Applied Over A Car That Had The Paint Touched Up Recently?

We highly recommend that any repainted surface on your vehicle be professionally painted and fully cured before the application of paint protection film. If you have touched up scratches or chips with a tube of “touch-up” paint and the paint protection film can be applied over it, the film will protect that area until it gets removed. However, if the paint protection film is removed, there remains a possibility that the space around the non-professional touch-up paint may peel off.
